Roberto Clemente, the first Latin American in the Baseball Hall of Fame, is revered as much for his character as for his athletics. A dominant player in the 1960s, batting over .300 for 12 straight seasons, and earning 12 Gold Gloves, he paved the way for future generations of Latino players. Clemente lost his life on a plane during one of his many humanitarian trips. Every player would like to have 3,000 hits, but few are born with his skills. However, everyone can take the time to reach out to help others, as he did. Members of the Roberto Clemente Little League, named in his honor, learn these lessons, as well as the elements of the game. The League, established in the North Ward of Newark in 1978, plays its games in Essex County Branch Brook Park. Joseph N. DiVincenzo, Jr. Essex County Executive.
